Merino Wool vs. Cashmere: Which Is Better for a Fisherman Beanie?

A fisherman beanie is a small accessory you can reach for day after day. Choosing between merino wool and cashmere comes down to the feel you enjoy and the weight you prefer.

At Knit Mom Shop, I make both a 100% merino wool crocheted fisherman beanie and a 100% cashmere crocheted fisherman beanie. Neither is the better choice for everyone. Here is what to consider before choosing yours.

Softness and weight

The merino beanie is made from thick, soft merino wool. It is a good place to start if you enjoy a more substantial wool feel. The cashmere beanie is described as exceptionally soft and lightweight, making it an appealing choice if a gentle feel against your skin is your first priority.

Stretch and Shape

Choose your size by measuring your head circumference and checking the individual product’s size guide. After washing, gently reshape your beanie and lay it flat to dry.

Warmth and coverage

Both beanies are intended for autumn–winter wear. The merino version offers thick wool, while the cashmere version offers warmth with a lightweight feel. 

Coverage matters, too. Both can be worn short with a folded cuff in a fisherman or docker style, or with the edge unfolded for a classic fit that partially covers the ears.

Which would I choose?

If you prefer thick, soft wool and a more substantial feel, start with the merino wool fisherman beanie. If lightweight comfort and exceptionally soft cashmere are what you are looking for, explore the cashmere fisherman beanie.

A little care goes a long way

Both hats should be hand washed in lukewarm water, about 30°C / 86°F, with a mild detergent or shampoo. Do not tumble dry; lay flat to dry. The merino instructions also advise against prolonged soaking. Follow the care guidance on the individual listing.
